With all the choice of fishing available in The Gambia sometimes it’s difficult to choose who to trust with your hard earned holiday cash, there are undoubtedly many options to consider. From top of the range professional outfits to the simplest of wooden craft.

For a few Euros you can venture up the many Mangrove creeks in an old boat with a rattly outboard, catch a few fish and have a very pleasant day. Or you can splash the cash and treat yourself to a days fishing on the best, fully equipped, boat available, with a top end skipper, and there is everything in between.

On this trip we chose the latter.

Paradise Fishing have been operating in The Gambia for a few years now and have a great reputation for the quality of service, and equipment they provide.

We were met at Denton bridge by the charming Yvette who runs the company.(If you don’t have your own transport you will be collected from your hotel.) She was super professional and took us to the boat to introduce us to the skipper, Malick and his deck hand.

The boat is a very well kept Angler Centre Console with enough room for up to 8 Anglers (plus crew), though today we were sharing the boat with Paradise regular, John, from Norfolk UK, A good angler and good company.
The boat is fully licensed and equipped with all the expected safety gear, first Aid kits Fire extinguisher, radio, GPS etc., it even has a Toilet!
We took our own tackle but a selection of top quality gear from the likes of Penn, Shimano, Fin-nor etc, is available for customers to use.
Twin 200hp Honda outboards quickly whisked us through the creeks and out into the main river round Banjul Harbor. Fishing for Cassava using live-bait was going to be the order of the day but for a while we struggled to find the shoals of bait fish with only the occasional success on feathers, that’s just how it is sometimes, but we persevered and after moving 6 times we felt we had enough so set off for the first mark. This half sunken wreck had been producing good catches over the previous week and the anticipation levels on the boat were high, it looked very fishy indeed!!! But despite having 6 rods out the only fish we could interest were small catfish up to 1kilo on shrimp. We sat it out hoping the Cassava would show up but none did.
Malick decided we should move to another area for the last few hours, where there is a sunken wreck. Once there we were quickly into the fish. Cassava, Catfish, small Captain fish and Butterfish all fell to Shrimp while the bigger Cassava were tempted on livebait. We finished the day with 10 Cassava, no really big ones but great sport on medium weight tackle.
We called it a day and headed back down through the creeks and we soon arrived at Denton Bridge, where Yvette was waiting to welcome us and hear of our catch. As one of the quickest boats in the country you certainly get more fishing time for your money.

In summery……. Paradise Fishing, expensive?… Yes!…. but the old saying “you only get what you pay for” is true. If you want the best days fishing on the best boat in The Gambia then I would recommend you treat yourself to a trip with Paradise Fishing.

Yvette made sure everything was in order – from the booking, to the pick-up, to arriving back at the hotel full of great experiences…FYI we ended up booking an additional trip while staying in Gambia! Fishing-wise: – Great Captain – Osman has been fishing +15 years in the area, and knows his business…great angler – Best boat in Gambia (you will see when you see the boats) – Gear worked perfectly – Deckhand knew his way around the boat and was a great help! – Great atmosphere – Plenty of fish both days, mainly Casava, but also the biggest Grouper ever caught on the boat! Would recommend for anyone wanting to fish The Gambia

Whilst we did not succeed in hooking a Tarpon as we dreamed we still had a fantastic day fishing, managing to catch a few decent Captain fish, Lady fish and Cassava fish! Ousman is a very experienced and hardworking skipper who did everything to ensure we caught. Overall would highly recommend

Hi Yvette

It was amazing, fantastic boat and crew. They tried their hardest to get us a catch but it’s called fishing not catching! The boat ride through the mangroves in the semi darkness only added to it. Thank you so much for fitting us in last minute and also to John for letting us join him.

Best wishes,

James and Anna

Hello Yvette,
Honestly, I do not know what to write about our fishing trip to the Gambia. Except that it was just amazingly fantastic. Thank you thank you very much. It was great organized. That started with our driver, who was always on time. Arrived at the harbour at the Denton Bridge we saw the boat and the other boats. It was immediately clear that we had booked the best boat in the whole region.
It could hardly get better until we went out with the Captain. He is the right man in the right place. He is a great captain and excellent angler. The chemistry between us was the same. When he realized with what passion we fish, we have really noticed how it infected him and how much fun he has in what he does.
Every day we caught the biggest and heaviest fish compared to the other boats there. There was also almost everything, Baracuda, Captainfish, Casava, Ladyfish, Bullhead, Stingray, etc.
It was just amazing. We will definitely fly back to Gambia and book your boat.
Thanks again for everything…
Many greetings,

We really had a good time. We had to get used to be on a boat as we became sea sick for a few hours. It was very nice that the captain helped us as much as possible to feel better as soon as possible. The boat was beautiful and comfy, fishing gear was good and so where the fish we caught! Compliments to the captain and the deckhand, the way how they helped us and how they work to catch the best and most as possible.

I went to The Gambia in March and fished one day with Paradise Fishing Gambia. The boat was super. Unfortunately no Tarpon but the skipper tried everything. I did caught a beautiful Lady Fish.

I knew The Gambia from Kunta Kinte of the well-known slavery film and the book of Negro. As a fishing ground I was not familiar, until a colleague of Tom van Kleef told me, while fishing at Gewande (NL), that he also runs a fishing company in Gambia, Paradise Fishing Gambia.

Coming home I searched on the Internet for the website that my colleague had said, I came on a site that looked good. Contacted for opportunities to fish in Gambia. The intention was to fish between Christmas and New Year, but because my wife had to take a vacation earlier, we left on November 17th. Everything was arranged in detail by Yvette.

1st fishing day I was picked up from our stay (Ocean Beach) by the skipper/the Guide to Denton Bridge. Here the boat and Captain Umaar were ready to take us to the fish places. The first day I caught a lot of fish, except big fish, I had a bite, but it went off with everything. According the fish guide, it was a large butterfish as the rod was double.

On the 2nd day many species of fish were caught, except big size fish. The crew have done everything to catch big fish, unfortunately it didn’t happen.

I will try The Gambia again next year as I have a lot more info about times and catches of big fish. As a country is also a beautiful country with quiet people and very friendly and helpful.

Greetings and until next year,

We really had a great time. The captain did know what he was doing. I will definitely recommend Paradise Fishing Gambia to my co-fisherman.

Good week of fishing with Paradise Fishing Gambia. Caught a lot of different species like Cassava, Red and White Snapper, Butter Fish, Lady Fish et c. Unfortunately the water was very milky but because of the experienced skipper we still caught nice fish. We definitely come back for the big ones in July/August during raining season.

Well what a discovery, I had a absolutely excellent days fishing with my farther John platten on board paradise fishing new vessel this is a fine example of a American Angler craft fully equipped wide beam boat with twin 225hp Mercury engines. Had a good variety of fish, butter fish, sting ray, grouper, frog fish and of corse the captain fish. I Would like to thank the team Tom (the owner), the captain, the deck hand, the man that can find the fish! A very professional set up with fear rates.
Thanks again will see you soon. Mark
